Two ladies and a little boy approached me at the Reference
Desk and asked where our books are on studying for the GED. When I found that
our copies were all checked out at the moment, I showed them the on-line database
“Learning Express Library” that Sno-Isle pays for that gives GED lessons and
practice tests. With this database, the ladies can learn and prepare for the GED test from home
or anywhere with internet access, and not worry about returning a book to the
library, or not finding it on the shelves. The Learning Express Library not only offers study help for other occupational tests, such as the ASVAB, nursing, plumbing and so on, but also offers courses on software and other continuing education.
Then I asked them if they had signed up the son for the
Summer Reading Program. They had never heard of it, so I explained that if he
read (or was read to) for 1000 minutes, he would win a free book of his own,
and also get a chance to win the big prizes of a cookie the size of his head, a
poster of him, or even a visit from the Bookmobile. They were very interested,
so I signed him up. We have some great (free) programs planned for the summer too, such as Alex Zirbe's "Imagination circus" on June 22, Little
Bear's Big Dream and Other Tales on June 30, and even the "Zombie
Apocalypse" on August 6. I made sure the family knew all about them.
I showed them where the Children’s section is, and
specifically where the picture books about cars and heavy machinery were
located. The boy was particularly looking for something about motorcycles, so I
left them to look through the non-fiction shelf, while I checked the catalog. I
found a great book called “Motorcycle song” by Diane Siebert on the shelf, and
when I handed it to him, his grin lit up the room.
